Digital calendar 365Jablonec is out: A brief look back at its beginnings

From idea to digital event calendar

It all started in the fall of 2023

At that time, we established a collaboration with the director of Kultura-Jablonec, Jakub Gerš. The original task was: digitization of the current printed event calendar.

Challenges in designing and prioritizing events

Our team of Product and UX designers conducted initial research and found that the initial concept had untapped potential. Therefore, various changes were proposed, including the addition of a new section to overview event locations.

The main challenge, however, was organizing the events in the newly designed calendar in a way that catered to both residents and visitors of Jablonec, who have different needs and expectations. Residents look for a general overview of events, while tourists are interested in events during specific time periods. Additionally, we had to account for different event durations, from one-day events to long-term ones.

• 🤔 So, when we sum it up, whose needs should be prioritized from the discussed users?
• 🤔 And how should different types of events be displayed? By the start date of the event? But then we’d always show the longest-lasting events first.
• 🤔 So, could prioritizing shorter events be the solution? Well, yes, but that would push the long-term ones too far back.
• 🤔 Should we split them into different tabs? And how to name them: one-day and multi-day? But then even events that, in terms of attractiveness, belong to shorter-term ones would fall into the multi-day category. And above all, how would filtering work in such divided tabs?

And that’s just a glimpse of the multitude of questions we had to resolve while designing the product. But the unexpected complexity of the issue made the project all the more interesting!
